Conjugation
French conjugation means changing the form of a verb to show who is doing the action and when it happens. Learning to conjugate verbs helps you build clear sentences, understand others, and express your ideas in French.
What Does Conjugation Look Like?
A verb’s basic form is called the infinitive, such as parler (to speak), avoir (to have), or être (to be).
When we use a verb in a sentence, its form changes according to the subject:
- Je parle français. — I speak French.
- Tu parles français. — You speak French.
- Nous parlons français. — We speak French.
The verb also changes according to the tense:
| Tense | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Présent | Je parle français. | I speak French. |
| Passé composé | J’ai parlé français. | I spoke French. |
| Imparfait | Je parlais français. | I used to speak French. |
| Futur simple | Je parlerai français. | I will speak French. |
