Présent-Imparfait-Passé composé Practice: In French, there are a number of past tenses and each one has its own particular meaning and uses. Many students have difficulty knowing when to use the passé composé or the imparfait. In this post you will learn when to uses l’imparfait or le passé composé.

L’imparfait
The imperfect tense in French, or the imparfait, is used to express, in the past:
• a state of being: Ma soeur était malade.
• a repetitive or habitual action: Tous les jours, je quittais la maison à 8 heures.
• a feeling or an emotion: Ils étaient très inquiets.
• a description: La plage était déserte.
• an action that is interrupted by another action: J’étudiais quand papa est arrivé.
The imperfect also translates:
• was …ing I was studying. J’étudiais.
• were …ing We were studying. Nous étudiions.
• used to When he was Young, he used to play tennis.
Quand il était jeune, il jouait du tennis.
Le Passé Composé
The passé composé is the most common French past tense and is often used in conjunction with the imperfect (imparfait)
The passé composé [j’ai mangé] literally translates to the English present perfect [I have eaten] but can also be translated as the English simple past [I ate] or the emphatic past [I did eat]. It can express any of the following:
• An action completed in the past: Ils ont déjà mangé. They have already eaten.
• An action repeated a number of times in the past: Oui, j’ai mangé cinq fois hier. Yes, I did eat five times yesterday.
• A series of actions completed in the past: Samedi, il a vu sa mère, a parlé au médecin et a trouvé un chat. Saturday he saw his mother, talked to the doctor, and found a cat.
