New year – important dates

The French have celebrated the New Year on different dates: March 1 in the 6th and 7th centuries, Christmas Day during Charlemagne’s reign, Easter Sunday in the 10th century and April 1 until the 16th century, at which point King Charles IX issued the Edict of Roussillon, which definitively fixed the New Year on January 1. New Year’s Eve is now known by the name of its saint, La Saint-Sylvestre, and it has ten local customs to observe.
