You often tell me that you can understand written French but that you have a lot of difficulty understanding spoken French. You have the impression that the French speak too quickly or that they do not articulate. It’s true, but it’s the same in all languages, we remove certain sounds to make pronunciation easier or to save time. 1 – The “ne” of negation disappears They write: He is not hungry. Orally, we say: “He is not hungry” The “n” which is required in writing is often removed when speaking. 2.- The “u” of “thou” becomes unified before vowel. We write: Are you tired? Orally, we say, “Are you tired?” The “u” from “tu” disappears and is replaced by an apostrophe. “You are” turns into “you”
