In this post, accord du participe passé avec avoir, you are going to learn when the past participle used with the auxiliary ‘avoir’ agrees in gender (masculine/feminine) and in number (singular/plural) with the direct object complement (COD) when it precedes the verb.  In other cases, the past participle remains invariable.

Look at these Examples:

– Il a acheté une tarte. (No object complement before the verb: no agreement of the participle)

– La tarte qu’il a achetée. (Agreement of the participle: ‘tarte’ is the COD of the verb ‘acheter’)  

 

– Il a acheté des baguettes. (No object complement before the verb: no agreement of the participle)

– Les baguettes qu’il a achetées. (Agreement of the participle: ‘baguettes’ is the COD of the verb ‘acheter’)  

 

– Il a acheté des bonbons. (No object complement before the verb: no agreement of the participle) – La bonbons qu’il a achetés. (Agreement of the participle: ‘bonbons’ is the COD of the verb ‘acheter’)
