je ne suis pas joueur, M. Picard. C’est à dire que jusqu’à la semaine dernière je n’avais jamais été joueur. Ce qui est arrivé? Je vais vous raconter tout.Comme vous le savez bien il y a des postes de vente de billets de loterie partout à Paris. Quand je suis arrivé à Paris, j’ai remarqué tout de suite qu’on s’occupait beaucoup de la Loterie.	I am not a gambler, Mr. Picard. That is to say, until last week, I had never gambled. What happened? J’achèterais des objets d’art, non pas pour les vendre, mais pour les garder chez moi. Je serais l’homme le plus heureux du monde. C’est ainsi que je rêvais. Mercredi passé, je descendais la rue et j’ai vu un de ces petits postes de vente de billets de loterie. La jeune fille qui était de service m’a vu regarder l’annonce. Elle m’a dit:	She said to me:
—Monsieur, achetez ce billet. C’est le bon. Il vous portera bonheur.	—Sir, buy this ticket. It’s the right one. It will bring you luck.
—Comment savez-vous que celui-là est le bon?	—How do you know this one is the right one?
—Parce qu’il a trois zéros. Regardez. l’ai regardé et en effet le numéro finissait en trois zéros. Je me suis dit,	—Because it has three zeros. Look. I looked, and indeed the number ended in three zeros. I thought to myself,
—Celui-là, il sort de l’ordinaire. Allons-y!	—This one is out of the ordinary. Let’s go for it!
Et voilà comment je suis devenu joueur!	And that’s how I became a gambler!
Le lendemain, je me suis levé de bonne heure, j’ai sonné tout de suite pour demander mon café, mes croissants et mon journal. Ils sont arrivés tous à la fois, mais à ce moment je ne m’intéressais qu’au journal. Je l’ai ouvert vite, le coeur battant. Mais où est-ce qu’on les a cachés, ces numéros? Ah, les voilà!	The next day, I got up early, I rang immediately to order my coffee, croissants, and newspaper. They all arrived at once, but at that moment I was only interested in the newspaper. I opened it quickly, my heart beating fast. But where are they hiding these numbers? Ah, there they are!
Qu’est-ce que je vois? Le numéro qui a gagné le gros lot finit en trois zéros: 26000. Je ne respire plus. Je cherche mon billet, en faisant des voyages dans la lune. Enfin je le trouve. Je peux à peine le tenir. Voilà les trois zéros. Mais, malheur! C’est un cinq, pas un six Tant pis!	What do I see? The number that won the jackpot ends in three zeros: 26000. I stop breathing. I look for my ticket, daydreaming. Finally, I find it. I can barely hold it. There are the three zeros. But, alas! It’s a five, not a six. Too bad!
Et j’ai pris mon petit déjeuner, en riant de moi-même. J’ai décidé que les émotions d’un joueur ne sont pas pour moi. Je préfère la vie tranquille	And I had my breakfast, laughing at myself. I decided that the emotions of a gambler are not for me. I prefer a quiet life.
