Quel Mauvais Temps !

1. Il pleut à verse. La bonne ouvre la porte de la maison de M. et Mme Brown. M. Picard entre.
2. La bonne dit:—Bonsoir, M. Picard. Quel mauvais temps! Entrez, entrez. Vous êtes trempé. Donnez-moi votre imperméable et votre chapeau, s’il vous plaît. Mettez votre parapluie dans le porte-parapluies. Vous pouvez laisser vos caoutchoucs ici à l’entrée.
3. M. Picard répond:—Merci, mademoiselle. Maintenant ça va mieux. Il pleut à verse, mais il ne fait pas froid. Je suis sûr que je ne vais pas attraper un rhume. Est-ce que M. Brown est là?
4. —Oui, oui, monsieur. Il vous attend dans le salon. Le voilà lui-même.
5. —Bonsoir, M. Picard. Je suis très content de vous voir, mais par un temps pareil on ne doit pas sortir. Venez dans la salle à manger et prenez une tasse de thé au rhum pour vous réchauffer un peu.
6. —Merci beaucoup, M. Brown. À vrai dire, j’ai un peu froid. Une tasse de thé au rhum fera mon affaire, et pendant que nous prenons le thé nous allons discuter le temps qu’il fait. C’est un sujet de conversation très courant et tout à fait à propos.
7. Les messieurs entrent dans la salle à manger en parlant d’un ton animé. Ils s’assoient et la bonne leur apporte un plateau de deux tasses et deux soucoupes, une théière pleine de thé chaud, un sucrier, et des cuillers à thé. Elle met le plateau sur la table avec une bouteille de rhum qu’elle va chercher au buffet. Puis elle sort de la salle à manger.
8. —Permettez-moi de vous servir, M. Picard, dit M. Brown. Il verse le thé dans les tasses avec une portion libérale de rhum pour chacun.
9. Pendant qu’ils prennent le thé au rhum les messieurs continuent à parler d’un ton animé.
10. Dehors il pleut toujours.

What Bad Weather!

1. It is pouring. The maid opens the door the Browns’ house. Mr. Picard cornes in.
2. The maid says, Good evening, Mr. Picard. What bad weather! Corne in, corne in. You are soaking wet. Give me your raincoat and your hat, please. Put your umbrella in the umbrella stand. You can leave your rubbers here in the hall.
3. Mr. Picard answers, Thank you. Now I feel better. It is pouring, but it’s not cold. I am sure that I shall not catch cold. Is Mr. Brown at home?
4. Yes, sir, yes. He is waiting for you in the living room. There he is (himself).
5. Good evening, Mr. Picard. I am very glad to see you, but in weather like this one should not go out. Corne into the dining room and drink a cup of tea with rum to warm yourself a bit.
6. Thank you very much, Mr. Brown. Actually, I am a little cold. A cup of tea with rhum will suit me fine, and while we drink the tea we will discuss the weather. It is a very common topic of conversation and quite appropriate.
7. The gentlemen go into the dining room chatting in animated voices. They sit down and the maid brings them a tray with two cups and two saucers, a teapot full of hot tea, a sugar bowl, and some teaspoons. She puts the tray on the table with a bottle of rhum which she locates in the buffet. Then she leaves the dining room.
8. Allow me to serve you, Mr. Picard, says Mr. Brown. He pours tea into the cups, with a generous portion of mm for each.
9. While they are drinking the tea with rhum the gentlemen continue to speak in animated voices.

10. Outside it is still raining.
