French Circles Level 8
Welcome to French Circles Level 8. You are now in the second course for Advanced students! Now is time to enjoy the language and have fun in this advanced Level. You know very well how to express yourself in Oral and in Writing in French and you want to expand your French Skills. During this eighth course you will continue to communicate in many real life situations and certainly you are more confident in the French language.
In this stage, you will work toward near-native fluency. You’ll analyze texts deeply, engage in high-level conversations, and express complex ideas with precision and cultural awareness. This level prepares you to use French professionally, academically, or in any advanced context. You’re not just learning French anymore—you’re living it. Now is time to enjoy the language and just have fun! This is a conversational course so we encourage you to participate actively in this program.
Materials:
A binder with a notebook, handouts, a CD and a booklet named “Study Notes” will be provided by your teacher at the beginner of the class. Please keep the “Study Guide” in your binder at all times.
Class:
The teacher will focus on your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. During class you will work with the teacher, alone as well as with classmates. You will be expected to:
- Participate in a positive way and accept the challenges of learning and using a new language: French.
- Contribute to class practices in a personal and meaningful manner.
- Demonstrate tolerance, patience and courtesy towards your classmates and teacher.

What to expect from French Circles Level 8
By the end of this level you will be able to communicate in the following areas:
Listening:
- You will understand fast, idiomatic, and unstructured native speech, even when delivered with regional accents or in emotionally charged contexts.
- You will follow long and complex arguments, detect underlying assumptions, and recognize irony, subtle jokes, and stylistic devices.
- You will be able to take notes, summarize, and respond critically to audio sources such as podcasts, lectures, debates, and films.
- You will comfortably participate in and respond to advanced media, including live broadcasts and interviews.
Speaking:
- You will speak naturally and persuasively in formal and informal settings, adjusting tone, register, and complexity to fit your audience.
- You will be able to lead meetings, give presentations, and manage sensitive or abstract discussions.
- You will express yourself clearly even on nuanced or controversial topics using complex sentence structures and sophisticated vocabulary.
- You will handle interruptions, reformulate, and adapt your message fluidly and effectively in real time.
Writing:
- You will be able to produce well-structured, coherent texts such as formal reports, essays, commentaries, and critiques.
- You will confidently use stylistic and persuasive devices, narrative techniques, and complex grammatical structures.
- You will skillfully use passive voice, indirect speech, complex tenses, idiomatic turns of phrase, and stylistic devices.
- You will revise and edit your own writing for clarity, tone, precision, and impact.
Reading:
- You will read and interpret a wide range of texts—literary, journalistic, technical, and academic—effortlessly.
- You will critically evaluate arguments, identify stylistic and rhetorical strategies, and assess bias or cultural context.
- You will compare authors’ perspectives, analyze literary style, and understand allusions, irony, and metaphor.
- Your vocabulary will exceed 2500–3000 words, including field-specific, literary, and culturally nuanced terms.
Homework:
Because all students learn in different ways, in our class you will learn how to use various strategies to learn the French language. Therefore, Homework will be assigned each week.
Don’t forget to complete and check the homework assigned by submitting your dictations, readings and vocabularies using the buttons below. It will be based on the lesson of the day, including speaking practices, memorizing vocabulary and grammatical structures as well as creative writing assignments according to your level. Put quality and time into your studies.
Quizzes and test:
Also, there is a Quiz or a dictation at the beginning of each class and a test every 3 weeks. Tests are important to learn a new language because they help you to practice and to test yourself. Take our Online Free French Tests as many times as you need to and keep practicing.
