The French Circles Method – Our 5 Steps to Learning French
The French Circles Method connects live online classes, guided homework, speaking practice, and teacher feedback to help you build confidence in French, step by step. Whether you are beginning your journey or strengthening your skills, you have a clear path to follow and support along the way.
Our approach brings together five connected steps: LEARN, PRACTICE, SPEAK, TRACK, and ADVANCE. You return to these steps throughout your learning journey, building on what you already know.

Use it in conversation. Follow your progress. Take your next step.
Our Five Steps to Learning French
The examples below illustrate activities at particular levels. Lessons and practice become more challenging as you advance.
1. LEARN — Build a Strong Foundation
Learn through structured, live online classes in small groups. Your teacher explains grammar, introduces useful vocabulary, and guides your pronunciation with activities suited to your level. You can ask questions, receive corrections, and practise during the lesson.
In-class example — Level 1: Learn how to introduce yourself, then build your own sentences: « Je m’appelle Maya. J’habite au Canada. J’aime la musique. »
2. PRACTICE — Make Learning Part of Your Routine
Revisit what you learn through dictations, reading, listening, vocabulary exercises, and short writing assignments. Regular practice helps you recognise familiar words, remember sentence patterns, and identify questions to bring to your next class.
Practice example — Levels 1–2: Listen to a short dictation, write what you hear, and review your corrections. At higher levels, practise with longer passages and more complex vocabulary and sentence structures.
Throughout your learning journey, keep three notebooks for conjugation, vocabulary, and grammar rules so you can return to what you have learned.
3. SPEAK — Put Your French into Action
Use French from the beginning, with support appropriate to your level. Conversations, storytelling, questions, and role-play give you opportunities to express your ideas. Your teacher helps you improve pronunciation and sentence structure as you practise.
In-class example — Levels 2–3: Read a short story, then retell it using « Au début… », « Puis… », « Alors… » and « Finalement… ». At higher levels, expand your retelling with more detail, explain the characters’ choices, and support your opinion.
4. TRACK — See Your Progress
Your Espace Étudiant helps you follow assignments, progress, and achievements. Teacher review connects completed work with feedback, helping you understand what you have accomplished and what still needs practice.
Progress-tracking example — All levels: Submit your homework, check its status, and review your progress after your teacher has approved the completed work.
5. ADVANCE — Move Forward with a Stronger Foundation
Move through nine structured levels with testing and teacher feedback. To advance from one level to the next, students must complete and pass the required tests and assessments for their current level. Your teacher also evaluates your speaking and listening during class and reviews your written work.
Why is testing important? Each level builds on the previous one. Tests help confirm that you understand what you have learned and can apply it, identify skills that still need practice, and guide your teacher’s feedback. This helps you enter the next level with a stronger foundation and greater confidence.
If an assessment shows that you need more practice, your teacher will explain what to review before you are reassessed. Progress means developing the skills you need for the next stage of learning.
Assessment example — Levels 2–3: Complete the required reading comprehension tests to demonstrate that you can understand a text and answer questions about it. These tests must be passed before advancing.
Before moving on — All levels: Complete the required work and pass your current level’s tests and assessments. Materials for the next level are provided after you pass your current level.

Your Learning Journey: Levels 1–9
Our levels follow a learning path from beginner to upper-intermediate French, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
| French Circles Levels | CEFR Level | Learning Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Levels 1–3 | A1 — Beginner | Introduce yourself, ask simple questions, and understand familiar everyday expressions. |
| Levels 4–5 | A2 — Elementary | Communicate in routine situations and describe your life, activities, and experiences. |
| Levels 6–7 | B1 — Intermediate | Tell stories, explain opinions, and take part in conversations on familiar topics. |
| Levels 8–9 | B2 — Upper Intermediate | Discuss more complex topics, develop arguments, and communicate with greater fluency. |
Your pace depends on your starting point, attendance, practice, and assessment results.
What Makes French Circles Different?
- Small groups and personal attention: Opportunities to participate, ask questions, and receive feedback.
- Connected learning: Class activities and homework reinforce the same skills.
- Practice across all four skills: Listening, speaking, reading, and writing develop together.
- A clear learning path: Structured levels and assessments help guide your next step.
- Encouragement along the way: Corrections help you understand mistakes and keep improving.

Who Is This Method For?
We adapt activities to each learner’s age, level, and goals:
- Adults: Build French skills for everyday communication, work, travel, or personal growth.
- Children and young learners: Develop vocabulary and confidence through guided, age-appropriate activities.
- Exam-preparation students: Strengthen their language foundation and practise the skills required for exams such as TEF Canada and DELF.
For TEF preparation, we ask students to complete Levels 2 and 3 first; exam preparation begins at Level 4. Your goals and current skills help us recommend the right starting point.
